Pine Manor Bests Mass. Maritime In Tri-match at Westfield State

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Senior Destiny Mann (Orlando, Fla.) led the Gators with 11 kills and 12 digs as they earned the victory in their first match of the afternoon, 3-1 (24-26, 25-10, 25-13, 25-19), against Mass. Maritime. They fell to Westfield, State 3-0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-19), in match two of the day.

With the split Pine Manor now stands at 8-15 on the year. Westfield State, who also won their match against Mass. Maritime, improves to 10-17. The Buccaneers fall to 0-23 in their 2014 campaign.

After dropping a close first set, 26-24, Pine Manor regrouped to take the next three sets and win their eighth match of the season. They won sets two through four by scores of 25-10, 25-13, and 25-19 respectively.

Senior Deb Langley (Abington, Mass.), junior Charleen Klangos (Lowell, Mass.), and freshman Becca Mello (Acushnet, Mass.) led the way offensively for the Buccaneers. Langley collected four service aces, while Mello registered five, helping them each a team-best seven scores. Klangos had a team-high four kills.

Sophomore Susan Le (Lowell, Mass.) had eight kills for the Gators, which was the second-highest mark in the match behind only Mann's 11. Freshman setter Ashley Whiteshield (Seward, Alaska) dished out 24 assists to go along with 11 service aces and 10 digs.

Pine Manor 0, Westfield State 3

The host Owls swept Pine Manor in the final contest of Saturday's tri-match by scores of 25-12, 25-19, and 25-19.

Natasia Franklin (Windsor, Conn.) and Mann each had six kills to lead the Gators. Mann had another double-digit dig effort, picking up 12. Whiteshield added 13 assists to her total as she led Pine Manor in that category.

Nicole Molleur (Union, Ky.) was the only player in the match to put down double-digit kills as she finished with 10. Senior captain Carolyn Cote (Chelmsford, Mass.) had an impressive 22 digs, while Brigid Murray (Norfolk, Mass.) handed out 29 assists, both match-highs.

All three teams return to action Wednesday night. Westfield State's next test is MCLA as they welcome the Trailblazers for a MASCAC game at 7 p.m. at the Woodward Center. Meanwhile, Mass. Maritime closes out its 2014 schedule with a trip Salem State at 7 p.m. The Gators next travel to the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) for a 7 p.m. match with the Blue Jays.
