Elms Sweeps Women’s Volleyball

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Pine Manor College women's volleyball dropped a 3-0 (13-25, 20-25, 15-25) final to host Elms College on Thursday evening at the Maguire Center.

Elms senior Christine Searless (Tolland, Mass.) and junior Alexandra Mack (Willbraham, Mass.) tied for match-high honors with 10 kills apiece to lead the host Blazers (2-11) to their second victory of the season. Pine Manor falls to 3-9 on the season with the defeat.

The Blazers stormed out to an early advantage, never trailing in the first set as they amassed commanding 13-5 and 20-8 leads before closing out the first frame with a lopsided 25-13 win.

The Gators held the early advantage in the second set, leading 6-5, following an ace from Mary Owen (Houston, Texas), and again at 10-8, following an attacking error from Searless and a kill from PMC senior Destiny Mann (Orlando, Fla.). Owen and Mann each finished the match with nine digs for the Gators.

Carline Kirksey-Almond (Lawrence, Mass.), Susan Le (Lowell, Mass.) and Rachael Julien (Brockton, Mass.), pictured, all tallied ten digs for the Gators. Le and senior Natasia Franklin (Windsor, Conn.) each had a team-high six kills for PMC.

With the Gators leading, Elms rattled off six unanswered points, rallying to take a 14-10 advantage and never looking back to take a 25-20 victory in the second set.

The Blazers held a 13-5 advantage in service aces in the contest, with Mack recording a team-high four while senior Caitlyn Larvey (Greenfield, Mass.) and freshman Lindsey McNiff (Kingston, R.I.) each added three. In addition, Larvey racked up a match-high 27 digs on the evening. Searless was the only other Elms player to finish in double-figures with 13 digs.

In the third set, it was more of the same as the host Blazers ran out to a 6-0 advantage before eventually enjoying a 9-1 lead at the time of the first Pine Manor timeout. The Gators rallied to close the gap to 10-6 but would get no closer than the four point deficit for the remainder of the match as the Blazers closed out the 25-15 third set victory to take the match 3-0.

Pine Manor will return to action on Saturday at Regis College, facing the host Pride and St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn. Elms will host Castleton and Rhode Island College in a non-conference tri-match beginning at 12 noon on Saturday.
