Gators Come Up Empty at Mitchell Tri-Match

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Pine Manor College women's volleyball (0-5 overall) dropped a close 3-0 (18-25; 26-28; 24-26) decision to host Mitchell before being downed by Purchase St., 3-0 (11-25; 18-25; 19-25) on Saturday afternoon at the Yarnall Athletic Center.

Sophomore Susan Le (Lowell, Mass.) recorded a team-high six kills in the opening match while also racking up a match-high 13 digs. Senior Destiny Mann (Orlando, Fla.) put down four kills and was the only other Gator to finish in double-figures in digs with 10.

After dropping the first set, 18-25, the Gators and Mariners battled to a 26-all tie at the end of the second set before a PMC attacking error and a kill from Mitchell's Amanda Garcia (New Britain, Conn.) gave the hosts the 28-26 set victory and a 2-0 advantage in the match.

Garcia finished the match with nine kills, tying with teammate Myla Williams (Roselle, N.J.) for match-high honors. Senior Gloria Charles (New Haven, Conn.) and junior libero Kaisea Caramante (Old Lyme, Conn.) each tallied a team-high 12 digs to help the Mariners earn their first victory of the season.

The Gators were unable to close out the third set and extend the match to a fourth game. With the Mariners holding a 24-22 lead, the Gators took advantage of a pair of errors to tie the score at 24-all, but a kill from sophomore Amanda Rowan (Sandy Hook, Conn.) and a PMC error allowed the hosts to earn the 3-0 victory.

In PMC's second match of the day, Mann  recorded a team-high five kills, while Le added 11 more digs to her total, but the Gators were defeated in straight sets by Purchase St. Freshman Mary Owen (Houston, Texas), pictured, recorded 10 digs and added a pair of kills for PMC in the setback.

Purchase St. raced out to an 18-10 advantage in the first set, before scoring seven of the final eight points in the set to take a 25-11 victory in the first set.

The Panthers held an advantage throughout the second set, with the Gators unable to get any closer than three points in the late stages. PMC closed the gap to 15-18 on a service ace from Owen, and again at 16-19 following a kill from Le, but would get no closer as Purchase St. earned the 25-18 set victory.

Purchase St. sophomore Sarah Gabler (East Concord, N.Y.) led all players with seven kills while also recording 9 digs in the match.

PMC's Ashley Whiteshield (Seward, Alaska) and Purchase's Alex Lally (Sunnyvalle, Texas) both recorded 13 assists in the match. Whiteshield finished the day with 28 assists after dishing out 15 in the opener versus Mitchell.

With the scored tied at 12-all in the third set, Purchase St. rattled off five unaswered points to take 17-12 advantage before closing out the match with the 25-19 set victory.

Pine Manor will now look to Tuesday night when they take on local-rival Lesley at 8:00 PM in Cambridge, Mass.

Both Mitchell and Purchase St. will be back in action on Wednesday night. The Mariners will will host Saint Joseph (Conn.) while the Panthers will host Lehman. Both matches are at 7:00 PM.
