Gators can't keep up with Southern Maine

GORHAM, Maine  – Sophomore Emma Cost (Waterboro, Maine/Massabesic) recorded a hat trick in 18 minutes, and senior Dayna Staffiere (Merrimack, N.H.) had a goal and two assists to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to an 8-1 win over the Pine Manor College Gators in a non-conference women's soccer game Tuesday afternoon at Hannaford Field.

Earning its third straight win, Southern Maine improves its record to 5-11 overall, and are now 4-6 at home.  Suffering its sixth consecutive loss, Pine Manor is now 3-9.

Cost scored the first of her three goals in the fifth minute on a through ball from freshman Megan Chase(Center Barnstead, N.H.) as the Huskies jumped on top of the Gators 6-0 before 20 minutes had expired on the clock.  Sophomore Maddison Egan (Rangeley, Maine) scored USM's second goal of the game in the 14th minute, before Cost hit for back-to-back goals in the 16th and 18th minute and a 4-0 USM lead.  Cost scored her second goal of the game, running onto a through ball from Staffiere and junior Olivia Mull (Portland, Maine/Cheverus).  Cost notched the hat trick volleying the ball out of the air on a perfectly placed cross from Chase for the 4-0 USM lead.

Freshman Izabella Lewis (North Monmouth, Maine/Monmouth Academy) found the back of the net on a feed from Staffiere in the 19th minute before Husky senior Hana McNally (Monmouth Junction, N.Y./Holy Cross) put USM ahead 6-0 in the 20th minute with her second goal of the season.

Pine Manor broke up the Huskies' scoring rush in the 29th minute as sophomore Cassie Cavender (Clarksville, Tenn./Northwest) beat USM goalkeeper Taylor Canastra (Fairhaven, Mass.) for her team-leading 13th goal of the season.  USM returned its margin back to a six-goal lead quickly, however, as freshman Maddy Richardson(Laconia, N.H./Moultonborough) hit a near post shot for her first intercollegiate goal in the 32nd minute to give the Huskies a 7-1 lead at the break.

Moved from her tradition position in the back to a spot on the front line, Staffiere scored the lone goal of the second half for the 8-1 final.  The goal was the first of the season for Staffiere and the fourth of her career.

Canastra played 45 minutes for USM making one save and allowing one goal.  Freshman Chantel Gagnon (Biddeford, Maine) played the final 45 and did not record a save. Pine Manor freshman Dorys Goncalves (Boston, Mass./Jeremiah E. Burke) started in goal for the Gators, making six saves and allowing seven goals. Sophomore Serena Goncalves (Lakeland, Fla./George Jenkins) played the final 45, allowing one goal and making one save.

Southern Maine returns to action Saturday (1:00 p.m.) at Little East Conference opponent Eastern Connecticut State University.   Pine Manor travels to Mt. Ida on Thursday (7:00 p.m.).
