Newbury Tops Women's Soccer, 6-2

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- Newbury College first-year forward Shannon Walsh (Massapequa, N.J.) scored four consecutive goals to lead the visiting Nighthawks to a 6-2 victory over Pine Manor College women's soccer on Wednesday afternoon at Hedley Field.

Pine Manor, serving as the visiting team on its home field, falls to 0-7-0 with the loss. Newbury notches its first win of the season and now holds a 1-4-0 record.

The Nighhawks opened the scoring early, as Ace Moley-Wolbert (Williamstown, N.J.) beat PMC goalkeeper Maria Vaughan (Okinawa, Japan) at 2:57 of the first to make it 1-0.

Vaughan made 15 saves in the contest, dropping to 0-7-0 on the year despite turning in her sixth double-digit save effort of the season. Newbury's Elizabeth Fox (Orono, Maine) made seven saves to earn the victory in goal.

Just over a mintue later, Walsh scored the first of her four consecutive goals. the first year forward found the back of the net at 4:15, 11:22 and 16:25 of the first --scoring a natural hat-trick to give Newbury a 4-0 advantage at the break.

With the Nighthawks in control following halftime, Walsh added her fourth goal of the contest as senior Jamie Chernsky (Glensville, N.Y.) played the ball across the six yard box for an easy finish.

PMC first-year Beverly Abrego (Somerville, Mass.) ended Walsh's string of goals at 49:51 of the second half, scoring her first career goal on an assist from junior Sybil Lynch (Hoboken, N.J.). With the Gators streaking down the field on a counter attack, Lynch crossed the ball to Abrego who calmly finished into the open net.

Corrinn Niski (Oxford, Conn.) added the final Newbury tally at 73:18 of the second, finishing on a feed from Morely-Wolbert to increase the Nighthawks advantage to 6-1.

Pine Manor would get one more back in the closing minutes of the game. Following a Newbury foul to left of the Newbury goal, Rachel Sanchez (Hyde Park, Mass.) played a ball into the penalty area that Lynch got a head to and redirected past Fox for the second Pine Manor goal.

The Gators will break until next Thursday when they will meet Wheelock for the second time this season. PMC will once again serve as the visiting team at Hedley Field for the 4:00 PM contest. Newbury will open its New England Collegiate Conference schedule this weekend when they play at Bay Path at 11:00 AM on Saturday.
