Lynch Scores Twice as Gators Fall to Fisher

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Pine Manor College women's soccer junior Sybil Lynch (Hoboken, N.J.), pictured, scored a goal in each half but visiting Fisher College cruised to a 9-2 victory over the Gators on Sunday afternoon at Hedley Field.

Fisher's Ashley DeSousa (Hazlet, N.J.) registered a hat-trick in the contest, scoring a pair of goals in the first half before adding another just after halftime. All three goals were assisted by junior Kaleigh Mulligan (Winter Park, Fla.) as the Gators could do little to stop the Fisher duo in the match. Mulligan also added a goal of her own in the second half.

Alicia Alex (Pepperell, Mass.) opened the scoring less than five minutes into the game. Following a Fisher corner kick, Alex corralled a bouncing ball in the penalty area and popped the ball up and over PMC goalkeeper Maria Vaughan (Okinawa, Japan) and in the net.

DeSousa then scored back-to-back goals at 10:36 and 11:17, first ripping home a one-time pass from Mulligan before lofting a clever chip over Vaughan after Mulligan had played the ball to open space to the left of the PMC net.

With the score 3-0, Fisher first-year Julia Schojan (Greece, N.Y.) finished on a pass from sophomore Emily Smith (Oxford, N.Y.), as Smith made a long run from midfield before laying it off for Schojan to make it 4-0.

Just under three minutes later, Lynch and freshman Beverly Abrego (Somerville, Mass.) combined to score the first PMC goal of the season. Abrego made a run down the left-side of the field, joined by Lynch she played the ball off to the junior forward who calmly beat Fisher goalkeeper Paige Ciavarro (Lynnfield, Mass.) to make the score 4-1 at 26:17 of the first.

Smith then countered again for Fisher, this time scoring a goal of her own on a one-timer from the top of the penalty area to help Fisher take a 5-1 lead into the half.

Schojan added her second goal of the contest less than a minute into the second half, beating Vaughan to her left to push the score line to 6-1. DeSousa completed her hat-trick at 50:54 of the second before Mulligan scored a nifty turnaround goal in the penalty area to make the Fisher advantage 8-1 at 56:45 of the second.

With the Gators trailing in the second half, Lynch would find the back of the net for the second time on the day. Following a save from Vaughan, the Gators goalkeeper delivered a punt to midfield that took a bounce up and over the Fisher back line, allowing Lynch to run on to the ball and finish with a low, hard shot into the Fisher net.

Vaughan, credited with the assist on the play, also finished with seven saves on the day for the Gators. Ciavarro earned the win in goal for Fisher, making five saves.

Four and a half minutes later, Camila De Silva (Everett, Mass.) scored the final goal of the contest, running on to a pass from freshman Stephanie Cushman (Rummford, Maine) and slotting home the ninth Fisher goal.

Pine Manor will look to rebound on Wednesday afternoon when they host local rival Wheelock at 4:00 PM. The Falcons will be back in action on Tuesday at 6:00 PM when they host Rivier.
