Gators Run Away with 9-1 Victory Against Wheelock

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Freshman midfielder Diego Maillo (Miami, Fla.) scored the first hat-trick in the history of the Pine Manor men's soccer program as the Gators defeated Wheelock 9-1 on Wednesday afternoon at Hedley Field.

The Gators now stand at 4-5 on the year and the Wildcats fall to 0-9.

The hosts didn't wait long to get the scoring started. Just over a minute after the opening whistle, Nathaniel Hayes (Newport Richey, Fla.) collected the ball in the midfield. He played a perfect through ball on to Maillo who beat Wildcat goalkeeper Evan Conway (Weymouth, Mass.) with a perfectly placed shot to the bottom-right corner.

Hayes and Maillo would hook up again exactly five minutes later to put the hosts up 2-0. Pine Manor completely controlled the game offensively in the first half outshooting Wheelock 18-3.

Wheelock was able to get on the scoreboard in the 16' as Rafael Pessah-Kirsch (Mexico City, Mexico) converted on a penalty kick. It was the first tally for the Wildcats this year and cut the Gators lead in half.

However, the lead wouldn't stay at one for long. In the 22', Ricardo Stewart (Graham, N.C.) collected a loose ball at top of the eighteen and calmly put it into the corner to reestablish Pine Manor's two-goal lead. Freshman Samuel Baugh (Abilene, Texas) would make it 4-1 shortly after as he converted on a penalty kick.

PMC continued the offensive attack late into the half. In the 34', Hayes got a goal of his own as he picked up a loose ball just outside the penalty area and put it past Conway. The freshman midfielder, who had a match-high five shots on goal, has scored four goals in the past three games.

Demetrius Agnew (Washington, D.C.) then put away his first goal of the year to close out the first-half scoring.

PMC would get three more tallies in the first fifteen minutes of the second stanza. Stewart scored his second of the game on a ball played across the box from Mahamadou Coulibaly (Bamako, Mali). Stewart then returned the favor by assisting on Coulibaly's goal less than three minutes later. Maillo finished off his hat-trick in the 59' as he dribbled up the left touchline, beating three defenders and the keeper to finish off the Gators' biggest win of the year.

Pine Manor men's soccer closes out its inaugural season on Friday at Hedley Field. The Gators will host the University of Maine at Presque Isle at 4 p.m.

The next test for the Wildcats is Southern Vermont, whom they will host at Hedley Field on Saturday at 1 p.m.
