Gators comeback falls short

BOSTON, Mass. – Thanks in part to a 19 kill night by Nighthawks freshman Patricia Farinas (Miami, FL) and a 22 assist night by senior Marlen Reynoso (Springdale, Ark.), Newbury College got their first win of the season, in their home opener, defeating the Pine Manor Gators 3-1 at Hellenic College on Tuesday night.

In the opening set, the Nighthawks and Gators would battle for momentum back and forth, to an eventual 18-18 tie. Pine Manor would close the set on a 7-4 run, with the Gators forcing multiple attack errors from the Nighthawks.

The second set would again be close early, eventually settling to a 17-16 lead for the Nighthawks. On this occasion, however, Newbury would go on a run of their own, scoring 9 of the final 10 points in the set to take the second set 25-17.

In the third, Newbury and Pine Manor trade points Julia Leggett's (Longview, WA) service ace gave the Nighthawks and early 8-7 lead. Newbury would dominate the remainder of play, including at 18-10 run that saw three aces from Leggett. The Nighthawks would finish off the Bulldogs 25-17 in the fourth set.

In the final set, the Nighthawks fought off a Pine Manor comeback attempt to take the set 25-22. Newbury broke an early 6-6 tie before closing out the visitors for their first win of the season.

As a team, the Nighthawks produced a season-high 12 aces;  Julia Leggett would finish the night with a team-high nine aces. Leggett would also contribute a team-high 16 digs.
