Gators Get First Win of the Season

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Pine Manor women's basketball team picked up its first win of the season on Tuesday (Nov. 20) night as the Gators knocked off Saint Joseph (Conn.), 60-49, on Brunelli Court.

With the win the Gators move to 1-4 on the season, while USJ drops to 2-4 with the loss.

GAME RECAP

The Gators opened up a sizeable 13-4 first quarter lead as they held the Blue Jays to just 15.4 percent shooting from the field in the stanza.

They would maintain that margin throughout the first half and went into halftime leading 24-15.

The Blue Jays slowly started to chip away at the nine-point deficit in the third quarter. Late in the period freshman guard Slivana Barcomb (Middletown, Conn.) hit a three-pointer to bring the visitors within one possession at 31-29. However, the Gators were able to hold off the comeback temporarily as Kristen Harris (Boston, Mass.) and Aleah Lauti (Millbrae, Calif.) each hit buckets to close out the quarter.

The game really opened up in the final frame with the teams combining for 45 points. USJ opened the fourth with a 9-2 run capped by a Borcomb three-point play, which gave the Blue Jays their first lead of the game with just over seven minutes remaining.

After trading baskets, PMC regained the lead with a 9-0 run and did not look back as it cruised to a 60-49 win.

KEY CONTRIBUTORS

  • Freshman Oceane Tabbak (Norwood, Mass.) and junior Arielle Harrell (Stockton, Calif.) tied for a team-high with 15 points apiece. Twelve of Tabbak's points came in the second half with 10 coming in the fourth quarter alone.
  • Lauti had a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
  • Harris also had double-digit boards with 12.
  • Harrell tied for a game-high with five assists.

FOR THE BLUE JAYS

  • Barcomb had a game-high 16 points off the bench as she shot 6-for-10 from the field. Fourteen of her points came in the second half.
  • Sophomore Melicia Mendez (Hartford, Conn.) and freshman Lindsey Montminy (Vernon, Conn.) each had 10 rebounds to lead the team.
  • Sophomore Anna Chevarella (Derby, Conn.) had seven points and five assists.

NOTES

  • This was Pine Manor's first win of the season and the first PMC win for first-year head coach Julie Plant.

WHAT'S NEXT

  • Pine Manor has a week off before it returns to action against another Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opponent. The Gators will travel to Norwich on Tuesday, Nov. 27 at 7 p.m.
  • Saint Joseph returns to action on Sunday, Nov. 25 as it matches up with Trinity at noon.
