CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Pine Manor came from behind in both ends of the Sunday's doubleheader to sweep New Rochelle and earn its first victories of the season.
The Gators improve to 2-16 on the year and New Rochelle falls to 0-12.
Sybil Lynch (Hoboken, N.J.) reached base in all ten of her plate appearances, including the walk-off hit in game one, to lead the Gator offense. Chardonai Rose (Fairfield, Calif.) earned her first two victories in the circle.
New Rochelle jumped out to an early lead as they scored seven runs in the first off of Pine Manor starter Vanessa Soto (Fontana, Calfi.). Jah-Leah Ellis (Harlem, N.Y.) had the only hit for the Blue Angels in the inning, which would also be their only hit in the game.
The Gators got one back in the bottom of the inning. After New Rochelle starter Sheila Conde (South Richmond Hill, N.Y.) retired the first two batters, Soto reached on an error by the centerfielder. She would steal third and come home when Rose reached on an error by the first baseman.
Soto got into more trouble in the circle in the second, walking the leadoff hitter Kevona Jackson (Yonkers, N.Y.). Jackson would advance to second on a passed ball before scoring following a pair of wild pitches. After Soto walked the next batter, Conde, she was relieved in the circle by Rose.
The guests added three more runs to take an 11-1 lead, but the Gators started to battle back in the bottom of the inning. Lynch got the rally started with a bunt single up the third baseline. She stole second and advanced to third when Samantha Jones (Springfield, Mass.) reached on an error. Lynch then energized the Gator bench with a delayed steal of home.
After a groundout, the hosts put together three consecutive hits by first baseman Anastasia Walker (West Springfield, Mass.), second baseman Ashley Whiteshield (Seward, Alaska), and Soto to close the gap to 11-5. They would add one more and go into the third trailing 11-6.
After a scoreless third, Pine Manor tacked on another run in the fourth, but the Blue Angels got it right back in the fifth as Allison Gurney (Southwick, Mass.) scored on a wild pitch.
The Gator bats went back to work in their half of the inning as Lynch once again started a rally. The New Jersey-native got on with a leadoff walk and stole her fourth base of the game. She would score on a single by Jones before Rose had the biggest knock of the inning. She hit a bases-clearing double to bring the Gators within one.
They got that one in the bottom of the sixth when Lynch scored on another reach-on-error by Jones.
The Blue Angels went quietly in the seventh giving Pine Manor a chance to win it in the bottom of the inning. Rose started the inning by taking an advantage of an error by the shortstop to give the hosts a baserunner. After a pair of groundouts, the stage was set for Lynch. She lined a double into the outfield to score Rose and give the Gators their first win in walk-off fashion.
Walker and Lynch each has three hits for the Gators in game one. Rose got the victory in relief as she pitched six no-hit innings and struck out four. Conde struck out five for the Blue Angels, but took the loss.
It was New Rochelle grabbing the early lead again in game two. They jumped ahead 2-0 in the first as Ellis and Jackson both walked and eventually came around to score. Ellis scored three runs for the guests in game two.
The Gators cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning with a Whiteshield sacrifice fly, before New Rochelle padded its lead in the second. They loaded the bases without the benefit of a hit and cleared them as the Pine Manor right fielder couldn't handle Lyndsey Edwards's (Baltimore, Md.) high fly to right. Edwards, who ended up on third as a result of the error, would eventually come into score to give the Blue Angels a 6-1 lead.
Pine Manor cut the lead in half again in the bottom of the second thanks to three straight hits by Michaela Clea (Washington D.C.), Lynch, and Soto. It added two more in the third to close the gap to one.
The big inning for the Gators came in the fourth as they scored five runs to take their first lead of the game. Whiteshield had an RBI-triple in the inning and Clea also drove in a run with a bunt single.
New Rochelle got its first hit of game two in the top of fifth as Gurney singled to drive in a run. The next batter, Meaghan Taylor (Warwick, N.Y.) did the same as the Blue Angels closed the gap to 10-8.
The Gators got themselves some breathing room with another five-run inning in the fifth. New Rochelle got two in the sixth and one in the seventh, but couldn't catch the hosts.
Edwards had a 2-for-4 game with two RBI to lead the Blue Angel offense, while Clea picked up three hits to lead the Gators.
Conde took the loss, going four innings and striking out three for the guests. Rose got her second win of the afternoon pitching the complete game and striking out eight.
Both teams will return to action on Tuesday. Pine Manor will host a twin bill against Southern Vermont starting at 3 p.m. and New Rochelle will travel to Purchase, N.Y. to play two against Purchase starting at 4 p.m.
