CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- Mount Ida's men's soccer struggled in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon as they fell to the host Pine Manor Gators 3-1 at Hedley Field. Despiting tying the score just before half, the Mustangs were unable to tighten their defense and keep out the pesky attack of the Gators, giving up two second half goals.
The early part of the game saw both teams put pressure on the opposing backline. Mount Ida was able to get another of players forward and tested Gators keeper Oscar Estrada (Medellin, Colombia) quickly, but he made a number of impressive saves to preserve the 0-0 score. Mustangs keeper Riley Ford (Guilderland, N.Y.) made a tough save on the speedy Jose Corrales (El Paso, Tex.) immediately after he was subbed into the match, but Corrales was able to beat Ford in the 30th minute off a deft pass from Diego Herrara (El Paso, Tex.).
Just before the end of the first half, Mount Ida was able to tie up the score with a terrific header from senior Cody Seel (Petersburg, N.Y.). Seel used a perfectly crossed ball to head in his first goal of the season, beating Estrada and giving the Mustangs some momentum just before the intermission.
Second half action began with sloppy play from both sides as both teams were whistled for a number of fouls that slowed down the pace of play. Again it was a substitute who was able to come on and do damage for the Gators as Alan Zamora (El Paso, Tex.) knocked a misplayed ball past Ford for the game-winning goal in the 69th minute. The Mustangs were unable to find another equalizer and Pine Manor put the game out of reach with a penalty kick from Jahvar Gayle (Bloomfield, Conn.) after a foul in the Mount Ida box.
Despite outshooting the Gators 13-12 and having a 8-2 advantage in corner kicks, the Mount Ida attack struggle to put pressure on the Pine Manor defense and it led to a number of speedy runs up the sidelines for the hosts.
Next Up: The Gators travel to Phoenixville, PA to take on Valley Forge in a ACAA Semifinal on Saturday November 4th at 1:00PM.
